What is the Process?

The Basic Ten Series

The classic Rolf work consists of ten 75 minute sessions typically spaced from one to two weeks apart. This initial series works systematically through the entire body to organize and bring the body structure to a higher level of order. The integration of the function of the all of the body's parts into the whole brings a smoother, more, efficient movement, lightness, and ease to the person's being.

The Basic Ten Series is the prelude to all subsequent series work and progresses as follows:

  • Session 1: Increases the air flow and ease of breath by freeing restrictions in the superficial fascia holding the pelvis and shoulder girdle.

  • Session 2: Builds a more stable and dynamic foundation for the entire body by freeing restrictions in the lower leg and foot. This allows the structures above to be more evenly stacked on top of the foundation in successive order.

  • Session 3: Extends the lateral line of the body, bringing length and balance to the sides of the body. After this session one must decide whether to commit to completion of the rest of the series.

  • Session 4: Extends the center line of the body, bringing length and balance to the core musculature. This session organizes the connection of the legs to the trunk. It is not recommended to stop at any point after this session until the series is completed.

  • Session 5: Continues where session 4 left off, extending the medial line of the body up into the trunk and in essence connecting the pelvis to the trunk.

  • Session 6: Extends and balances the lower end of the spine by bringing mobility and balance to the sacrum.

  • Session 7: Balances the head on top of the spine and the rest of the body.

  • Session 8: Balances the whole lower segment of the body in relation to the upper segment.

  • Session 9: Balances the whole upper segment of the body in relation to the lower segment.

  • Session 10: Integrates the previous work by balancing the entire body with an emphasis on functionality.

"Structural Integration is about the whole person, it is about fascia and feeling. The sensation of moving from weakness to strength, the exhilaration of owning a new part of oneself, the immediate and simultaneous reeducation of one's being and action, the joy of self-empowerment, waking up, these are the experiences of Structural Integration."

-Emmett Hutchins

What Can I Expect?

Once a session is scheduled, you will be sent a welcome packet so that you will come to the session prepared to discuss your health history and goals for the work.

The sequence of a typical first session is as follows:

  • I will discuss with you your goals and body history (from the packet).
  • I will assess the your structure in standing, sitting, and movement.
  • You and I will work together while you are lying on the table.
  • I will use my hands, forearms, and elbows to skillfully make adjustments to your fascial layers.
  • You will hold a particular alignment and perform specific movements as I work.
  • I typically use only a low table and an adjustable bench for work but may use various other props to keep you aligned while I work.

I heard Rolfing is painful. Is it?
I will work within the threshold of your pain tolerance. My goal is to get the maximum change in your body within your pain tolerance. Exceeding this threshold is not in either of our best interests. Pain causes tension and resistance in your body.

" If you can imagine how it feels to have a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness, and chronic stress, at ease with itself and the earths gravitational field, then you understand the goals of Structural Integration."

-Ida Rolf

Additional Offerings

Personalized series and individual sessions are available upon consultation with the practitioner and only after the client has completed the ten series.

The beauty of this work is that a session causes a change in the core alignment of the body and the body then 'organizes itself' in the period between sessions. The effects of gravity on the body's new alignment cause further changes. In essence, the session is the 'starter' and gravity is 'the driver'.
